Project Description:
Vardar River and Dorjan Lake are water resources shared by the North Macedonia and Greece but, as for the date when this project started, there were no formal agreements or arrangements on water management between both countries. The project was designed to assist the North Macedonia, main beneficiary country, in entering into joint efforts with Greece to improve cooperation on river basin planning and water management.
The project objective was to improve the quality of the water resources shared by Greece and the North Macedonia so as to progress towards compliance with the EU Water Framework Directive.
Types of services provided within this project included:
- River basin management;
- Production of a Joint River Basin Management Plan for the River Vardar in line with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD);
- Transboundary water resources management;
- Assistance to the government in developing the international water policy; and
- Training of public officials on the practical implementation of the WFD.
