Project Description:
The objective of the project was the reparation of water and sewerage infrastructure which was damaged and destroyed by the Mitch Hurricane and affecting a wide share of the rural population of Honduras. The project covered the geographical areas of Valle, Francisco Moraz�n, El Para�so, Olancho, Col�n and Gracias a Dios (altogether representing nearly 60% of the total country surface).
The project consisted in two main components:
- Drinking water (water supply and wells). This component included the rehabilitation and extension of the basic water supply systems for more than 855 rural ducts and construction of 2.734 rural wells;
- Basic sanitation. This included the construction of 42.000 latrines, training of 900 local promoters and educational courses for beneficiary families in hygienic and sanitary practices
Types of services within the project included:
- Technical Assistance for rehabilitation of the water and sewerage infrastructure (including drinking water supply and sanitation systems);
- Procurement of works and equipments, following the EU Procurement procedures;
- Supervision of the Construction Works, acting as Engineer;
- Technical Training to local promoters and water infrastructure experts;
- Training in hygiene and health; and
- Institutional Strengthening.
